Chromebooks on COVID’s Front Lines

Chromebooks are computers for everyone…except when you need to print.

Printing from a Chromebook can be a real pain in a**!

Google made it easier for a time with its Cloud Print Service, but the company recently announced it would no longer support Google Cloud Print after December 31, 2020.

What’s a Chromebook user to do?

You have two options:

1) set up CUPS for printing to local and network printers, or

2) use one of Google’s third-party “printing partners” to manage your print needs.

We’ll go into both options below.

While we’re sad to see Google Cloud Print go, CUPS is a more universally accepted UNIX-based printing system, which widens the field of choice for Chromebook compatible printers.

Now, almost any new printer is compatible with your Chromebook!

Enter The King Of CUPS

CUPS is an acronym for Common UNIX Printing System.

CUPS uses Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) to connect with local and local network printers.

Google hopes CUPS will replace its Google Cloud Print Service.

According to the Googs, when you open your Chrome settings and add a printer, the CUPS protocol should automatically find local and network printers and add them to the list of Chrome printers.

Simply select your printer and start printing — no additional setup needed! Easy-peasy!

The Google reach is broad and deep, and printer manufacturers have stepped up to meet the demands of Chromebook users, offering a slew of devices and printers for Chromebooks.

A variety of 2022 printer models make a good match for the ubiquitous Chromebook.

With the right printer, Chromebook printing is as easy as Ctrl+P!

Printers for Chromebooks and printers that work with Chromebook are awesome!

Don’t forget to cash out your leftover toner and ink cartridges with a reliable toner buyer.

Setting Up CUPS

On Chrome devices, simply go to your settings and select print. Available printers should automatically appear.

Like Google Cloud Print, you can use the Admin Console to manage your printers and users. The Admin Console will allow you to set:

  • User-printing defaults for two-sided and color printing.
  • User account and file name in the IPP header of the print job included over a secure IPPS connection. This enables third-party printing features, such as secure printing and print-usage tracking.
  • Set-up of advanced printing attributes (stapling, paper trays, pin printing).
  • PIN-code printing management. This allows users to enter a PIN when sending a print job and release the print job for printing when they enter a PIN on the printer.
  • Extension APIs for third-parties to access print job metadata and submit print jobs.

According to Google, the Admin Console will soon allow support for external CUPS print servers, including authentication.

Additional future upgrades include a policy to configure connections to external CUPS print servers, and APIs to provide printer-management capabilities.

Using A Print Partner

In addition to (or instead of) using CUPS to print from your Chromebook, you can also follow the links below to learn more about Google’s printing partners.

You can set up printing with a printing partner through the Admin Console.

Turn Google Cloud Printing off by accessing Chrome’s settings.

Depending on your circumstance, you may need to ask a server administrator to turn off Google Cloud Print.

Will my Epson WF 7620 printer continue to work wireless Cloud print after December 2020?
I need both letter and 11 x 17 (B size paper). Can a app be used to continue working? This is a home office.

Any of the printers suggested here will work, Larue, as should most Wi-Fi printers. To connect a printer to OnePlus Nord N200 5G:
            1. Open settings
            2. Choose Connection and sharing
            3. Select the Print settings
            4. Click Default Print Service
            5. Turn the feature on
            6. If your printer is powered on, it should appear on the list of available printers on your OnePlus Nord N200 5G
This video may be helpful to you, Larue.

Hi, Ian! We love our budget Acer Chromebook and we are able to print to our Canon MX922 inkjet, no problem. As long as your printer and your Chromebook share a wireless network you should be able to print.

          4. Rob Errera

          6. Rob Errera

We’ve heard of this problem before, Nida. Sometimes the HP Envy printers get a little wonky with Chromebooks. You may want to reset both your HP Envy printer and your Chromebook back to factory defaults. You can find out more about resetting Chrome to its default settings here.

As long as your HP wireless desktop series 3772 and your Chromebook share a wireless network, they should connect. These folks at Chrome Unboxed set up their HP printer using an Android phone and the HPSmart App.

Hi, Denis. Unfortunately, it looks like the MG2550 doesn’t support wireless printing, so you may have trouble getting it to work with your Chromebook. However, try connecting the printer directly to your Chromebook with a USB cable and then check “connected devices” under your Chromebook’s settings panel. You may find a workaround. That’s a big question, Ethel, and the answer depends on your user behavior and budget. As far as printers go, the HP Officejet 3830 and Samsung Xpress color laser printers are both highly recommended. When it comes to Chromebooks, the Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga is a beauty if you can afford it, while Samsung makes a bunch of nice Chromebooks in the $200-300 range. Maybe pairing a Samsung Chromebook with a Samsung printer is the way to go? Or an HP Chromebook with an HP printer? The possibilities are endless. Good luck!

Sure, as long as you are willing to put up with having to reconnect the printer every stinking time your Chromebook goes to sleep. My acer constantly loses connection to my printer and just turning the Chromebook off/on does not fix it. Each time I have to: unplug the printer, power off the modem, power off the Chromebook and then turn everything back on in the following order: modem/printer/Chromebook in order to reconnect to the printer (only to have to do this all over again the next time I want to print). My printer is less than a year old (HP) and my Chromebook is updated. When is Google actually going to provide a fix to this annoying issue????

You’re not the first person to have this annoying problem, Deborah. We’ve got to ask:
Is your ChromeOS software up to date?
Is your printer’s driver and firmware up to date?
If so, and your HP printer continues to disconnect from your Acer Chromebook, you should report your problem to Google. Hopefully, they’ll fix this bug in a future update. You can report ChromeOS issues to Google here

Yes, Jeff! As long as everything is on the same wireless network, printing shouldn’t be a problem. The MFC-J480DW is a great all-in-one printer and should provide years of service. If you need more info about the MFC-J480DW check here. Happy printing!

It should work fine! The Pixma TR4450 is a nice, compact all-in-one printer with wireless connectivity. As long as your Chromebook and your Pixma share the same wireless network you should be good to go. Check here if you need more information.

I have a Canon MG2120 Printer and recently just brought the new Samsung Chromebook. Are they compatible or would I have to purchase a new printer as well. It does recognize the printer when I plug it into USB Port but it tells me I need to set it up manually

This may sound basic, Marion, but have you tried rebooting both your Chromebook and your printer? Also, make sure both your Chromebook software and Canon printer drivers are up to date.

Is my Canon G3000 Series Printer compatible with My Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook?

The Canon G3000 Series of printers are a few years old now, but they’re still powerful all-in-one machines. The G3000 series comes with built-in WiFi, so as long as your printer and your Lenovo Chromebook are connected to the same wireless network, you should be good to go! Oh, and make sure your Chromebook software and Canon printer drivers are up to date.

will my cannon mx492 work with a Lenovo chrome book? will not work with cord plug in says not compatible. Is there a way to wireless that is easy to set up?
thank you. I wanted cord hook up was part of the reason I got this model of chrome book. Is there a better solution or good printer to get that prints good pictures and does not use a ton of ink that I can just use cord? or is wireless option better.

Thanks for the question, Chanda. The first thing you should do is update the drivers and firmware on your Canon mx492. You can find both here. Next, restart your Chromebook and go to the settings panel. Run any software updates that are available. Connect your Chromebook with your mx492 using the USB cable and restart both the Chromebook and the printer. If you still get an incompatibility issue, shut everything down, unplug the USB cable and try reconnecting wirelessly. As long as your Lenovo Chromebook and your Canon mx492 share a wireless network, your should be able to print from your Chromebook. In fact, these folks love the mx492 as a Chromebook printer, and this article outlines the connections between the Chromebook and the mx492 quite nicely.

You should be able to download the latest driver for your Canon G3202 here, Anthony. Not sure why the step-up isn’t working over USB but you should be able to connect your Chromebook with your G3202 wirelessly as long as they share the same wireless network.

I dont know what is the problem here.

    Any idea??

Why can’t all of HP’s equipment just play nice with each other, Amr?
First I would see if there are any firmware or driver updates available for your HP Laser CP1215.
Check here for updates, or here (though it looks like the available drivers are for Windows-based computers, not Google Chrome).
Next, update your Chromebook’s printer drivers here.
Restart both the CP1215 and your Chromebook and try adding the CP1215 as a new printer. Good luck!

Sounds like you’re rocking a Samsung XE303C12-A01US Chromebook, Rachel. It’s a solid machine but it’s a bit older so I wouldn’t break the bank on a new printer. HP Deskjet printers are affordable and replacement ink cartridges are widely available. They will also connect wirelessly to your Chromebook.
